A major depressive episode may include these symptoms:

1. Persistent sad mood, most of the day, nearly every day
2. Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities and decreased energy
3. Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or excessive sleeping
4. Thoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts
5. Low appetite and weight loss or overeating and weight gain
6. Restlessness or irritability
